    Notes:

Grace worked as a maid for the United Church facility (?) across from Deer Park United Church (Avenue Road and Bloor?), Toronto, ON (Grace (Varley) Reynolds)

Kingsley Joblin was the minister at Westminster United in Weston, ON just before Murray and Grace Reynolds moved there in 1947. He started the couples club and was involved with the organization of the club (as was Murray and Grace) after he left Westminster to teach at Emanuel College, Toronto. Kingsley's brother was the minister at Manor Road United Church, Toronto, ON, when the Reynolds' family moved from Manor Road Church to Westminster in 1947. (Grace (Varley) Reynolds)

George Pratt (Harriet Pratt's brother) was a 'cute old guy'. He kept a chamber pot in his room, even though the bathroom was next door, when he came to visit. It was my job to empty the chamber pot. (Grace (Varley) Reynolds)

The wicker basket that contained a cake was sent from Grace Varley's great grandmother in England (Sarah Webb) to Grace's grandmother (Harriet Pratt). (Grace (Varley) Reynolds)

The house where Grace Varley was born is on the road that used to be known as Town Line in Oakville, ON. (Grace (Varley) Reynolds)

    Notes By Grace Reynolds:

Memories For a "31" Grad - Grace Reynolds

The evening before our first day - trying on our uniforms & meeting on the stair landing (no sitting room) in the Dennison House - Rusholme Rd. & College St. This was a time to meet our classmates - last names only were used.

Sept. 28 - first day of our careers - orientation - classes - learning more - doing more with patients - studying, working on the wards. "Will I make it?" - never quite sure.

The "Cap Day" following six months of probation. Worked 12 hr. night duty for 2 months. Given more responsibilities - sleep time broken for classes. Never got a whole day off until holiday time.

Holidays - go home, rest up, ready for another year.

Spent 2 months at Sick Children's Hosp. - enjoyed my time there. Some students went to the Psychiatric Hosp. in Guelph. 2 months Public Health - really interesting. 2 months diet kitchen.

Then - wonderful day - graduation "1931" held in the garden at Rusholm Rd. in the afternoon followed by a dance in the evening. It was a wonderful day - graduation ceremonies - family - friends - flowers. A perfect June day to remember.

    Summary of Grace's Life
Grace Beatrice Reynolds - nee Varley

    born May 12, 1908 - Oakville

orphaned in 1908 - mother, aunt, baby brother died in 1908 flu epidemic

    spent 10 years with grandparents

left school to work at 16 and moved to Toronto at 18 yrs.

went to night school and 1/2 days day school while she worked so she could obtain her credits so she could go into training to be a nurse in 1928 at Women's College Hospital

graduated in 1931 obtaining a prize for obstetrical nursing.

took a post grad. course at Toronto Psychiatric Hospital mainly to be doing something when there was less call for nurses. Learned a lot and enjoyed the course.

the thirties were difficult times - recession years.

married in 1939. Married nurses not allowed to register for private duty work or work in hospitals.

when war started in '39 nurses were needed again - but was now busy at home with two children.

later did part time and full time nursing at the Women's College Hosp. and Humber Memorial Hosp.

I was busy and happy in church activities Harvey Ave. Church, Manor Rd. United and Westminster Church. I taught Sunday school, was active with the couples club & later with the Fellowship group. Helped with meals for the Lions & Rotary Clubs.

also, always active with the doings of my Hospital Alumnae - serving on the executive & president at one time.

during the thirties my holidays were spent attending CGIT camps as nurse - one summer at a United Church "Fresh Air" camp and a camp run by the University Settlement.

A close friend - a nurse - her obituary notice said "a long and useful life." I like that & for the most part sums up my life - it has had its ups & downs - mostly happy. I am grateful to have had a loving husband, a great family & good friends.

PS. happy to have had the opportunity to visit some other countries to broaden one's horizons.

    -Grace Reynolds abt.1995

    Notes:

In the early 1890s George (Senior) was prevailed upon (most probably by his mother-in-law, Hannah Dry) to allow the boys to go into a children's home, and places were found for them at "The Fagan's Home for Boys" in Southwark Street in London, just south of the River Thames.

Conditions in children's homes in Victorian England were very harsh and there is no reason to believe that the Fagan's Home in Southwark was any different. Discipline would have been rigid, corporal punishment severe, and the chores and work within the Home repetitive and monotonous. On the plus side, the inmates of the Home were fed, they had beds to sleep in, they were safe from the depredations of a life on the streets, they were educated in the three Rs, and they were normally taught some kind of trade outside the Home. Many of them were also given the opportunity to emigrate to overseas countries such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand, where there were better prospects for them to prosper, and we know that this is what happened to George's younger brother, William Henry, who sailed from Liverpool for a new life in Canada in 1897, when he would have been 14 years old.

He helped build bridges on the QEW and that he was an expert stone mason.

William Varley smoked a pipe and would make one filling last the whole day. He boarded at the home of James and Harriet Buszard. (Grace (Varley) Reynolds)

Excerpt from the booklet "History of St. Jude's Church" that may be referring to Harriet

"Life was hard for many in those days because there were no pensions or social services. Mrs. Buszard was made caretaker of the church in 1911 because, I image she had a family to support. Her husband was a carriage painter at Whitaker's Carriage Works. He fell from the roof one day, suffered a concussion and I think died a few years later. She received the magnificent salary of $200 per year and had to pay $8.00 per month rent. I remember her very well because she used to come to our place in the summer to pick strawberries. She was a good worker and never complained, evidently practicing St Paul's philosophy of being contented with her lot."

    Notes:

Francis was baptised in Holy Trinity, Hull. He married Hannah Blowman of Garton on the Wolds, again in Holy Trinity, on 29th July 1836. Over 26 years Hannah gave birth to 17 children, 5 of who died in infancy and, along with their mother and father, are buried in Garton churchyard. Francis became a prominent figure in Driffield during the Victorian era; starting his career as a Taylor he was well known as a Draper and ran his business from 9 Market Place, Driffield. When Francis Dry had the shop his name was written across the side of the building, later Hepworth's Tailors were situated there and they painted across the name but I have old books with pictures of the Market Place in them and "F Dry" is quite visible. An advertisement in the Driffield times 9th June 1860 reads:

"F Dry - Cheap Manchester House - begs to announce his return from the London market where he has selected an extensive assortment of millinery, mercery and drapery goods"

Also, in a book written by local historian, Peter Howarth, about Driffield in 1871 there is an advertisement taken from the Driffield Times, which implores the reader to

"Come and visit F Dry's at Manchester House to see the latest Paris fashions"!!!

When a Driffield lady contacted me concerning the family she told me of the time when Boots the Chemist took over the building some time in the 1950's and she as an employee was helping to sort things out, the side of the wagon with F Dry painted on it was still on the premises!!

Through the years he had various addresses in Middle St., New Road, George St. etc.

He later owned 27 Beverley Road, a substantial residence even now. You can still see the marks on the side of the house where his wagon was taken through to the stables. The house became known as the 'Drapers House'. Francis has descendants all over the world including USA and New Zealand.

    The Dry Family of Driffield

    Dec 30, 1865
A circumstance occurred on Tuesday night last, about half past nine o'clock, which showed the great danger of leaving a horse and gig standing unprotected in the street. A horse and gig belonging to Mr William WITTY, were standing opposite Mr PICKERING's ironmonger, when something startled the horse and it darted off in the direction of home. In passing Mr Francis DRY's shop, Mr WITTY's gig, driven by Mr LOWTHER, grocer, Langtoft, was coming in an opposite direction. The shock was so great as to throw Mr LOWTHER out of the gig and to break off both shafts with which the horse galloped off, leaving the other part of the gig a complete wreck. We are very glad to state that Mr LOWTHER, beyond a severe shock, received comparatively little injury

29 Dec 1866, Newspaper Article, Great Driffield, Yorkshire, England. Driffield Times. TEMPERENCE MEETINGIn the evening of Christmas Day the temperance society held a meeting in advocacy of teetotal principles, in the Independent School room, Driffield, Mr Francis Dry in the chair. The meeting opened by Mr H. Bell giving out a hymn and Mr E. Temple engaging in prayer. The Chairman then remarked on the unsettled question as to what constituted a moderate drinker, some fixing the maximum at sixteen pints a day. He then spoke of the great prevalence of the system of drinking amongst professors, of which, said he, I would sweep the church. At first the speaker had some delicacy, as a tradesman, in not treating his customers with a glass or two, but now he found that a good dinner was far better and more appreciated by his customers than the glass system. Mr Hy Bell viewed the subject in a dietary point of view, and argued that the incalculable amount of evil bred and fostered by the drinking usages of society infinitely outweighed the small good which some parties professed to derive from a moderate use of spirituous drink. Mr James Taylor took for his text, "haste to the rescue," and after showing very clearly from what society should be rescued, gave an amusing incident in his own history, illustrative of workmen's capability of enduring the hardest toil in the harvest field, and also of the wish of all sensible masters to provide suitable drinks for their teetotal harvesters. Mr E. Temple graphically described the monsters of evil intemperance, and called upon all out of the ranks of temperance to come over and help them. Mr P. Cowen said on most questions he used the persuasive principle, but on the temperance question he would adopt the maine law; he would use force in its suppression. After the meeting had been addressed by Mr Rennison and others, the meeting closed at an early.

12 Aug 1871, Newspaper Article, Great Driffield, Yorkshire, England. Driffield Times. The public, with ourselves, will be glad to know that the relief fund for the widow and family of the late William Temple, who was killed by the overturning of a steam boiler, has reached the sum of £51 6s for which sum the benevolent projectors of the scheme of raising the fund and the sorely bereaved widow and children feel highly grateful and beg through us to return their most cordial thanks for the deep sympathy and extensive practical benevolence displayed on the late mournful occasion. A worthy deceased gentleman of Driffield was once told of the suffering and poverty of a family in Driffield, when that gentleman, placing a sovereign upon the table, said, "I pity the family that amount, how much do you pity it?" And the public of Driffield have in like manner given an unmistakable expression of their kind sympathies by subscribing from sums of 6d to £3 3s, so that the noble sum above has been raised in a short time. We understand that £11 6s is to be placed in the hands of the disconsolate widow and £40 in the joint trusteeship of Mr Francis Dry (who originated the subscription) and Mr John Temple, brother of the unfortunate deceased.

    • Residence: Bef 1787, Driffield, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Taxation: 1792, Driffield, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Probate: 1812

    Notes:

Robert Dry was baptised in Holy Trinity Church, Kingston upon Hull on 20 June 1756. His father's name was also Robert as was his father before him. His father's burial is recorded in St Mary's Church, Lowgate, Hull, parish register as 13 February 1773 and states that he was a labourer, other than that, nothing else is known yet.

Robert was married to Jane Terry (daughter of Richard Terry, sawyer) in Holy Trinity in 1777 and on 27 December that year their son John was baptised at the same Church. Another son, Richard, followed on 28 June 1781 and this is the first time Robert's profession of Glazier is mentioned.

Sometime in the 1780s the family moved to Driffield (It is a family tradition that they travelled via the canal) because Easter Dry (or Hester/Esther according to the censuses) was baptised February 1787 at All Saints Driffield. On 3rd January 1790 another daughter, Christiana, was baptised at the parish church as was, on 2nd September 1792, (also baptised 4th February 1793 at Hull!) the last child, yet another Robert and our direct ancestor.

Robert is mentioned in an entry in the land tax register for 1792 for Driffield. We also read in the quarter sessions for 1795 in Driffield that John Dry, Glazier, was witness to a riot and gave evidence that William Balance, Blacksmith, had broken a shop window.

In his will he left goods and chattels (house, business, money etc) to Jane for as long as she lived (the money to be shared amongst the family, that is, John, Richard, Robert, Easter and Christiana) and then to pass on to "my son Robert and his heirs and assigns forever". It has to be said that the inheritance was worth less than one hundred pounds! Jane became a lodging-house keeper in Middle Street and died aged 78. She was buried, presumably in the Churchyard, 5th July 1832.

    The Dry Family of Driffield

    Residence:
They moved from Hull to Great Driffield between 1781 and 1787. Family tradition says they travelled by canal on a barge.

    Probate:
In his will he left goods and chattels (house, business, money etc) to Jane for as long as she lived (the money to be shared amongst the family, that is, John, Richard, Robert, Easter and Christiana) and then to pass on to "my son Robert and his heirs and assigns forever". It's hard to lose a partner dear,
    A parent fond and kind
It's hard to lose a friend sincere, of independent mind
Then what avails all earthly bliss, since we to dust return?
There is a better world than this,
    So why should mortals mourn?
