    Notes:

    Funeral Message for Wm. H. O. (Bill) Lake - 24 March 1992
    The Rev. Peter Wesley

Bill Lake was a worrier. He worried that he just wasn't good enough. He worried that he wasn't a good enough husband, or a good enough father. He worried that he wasn't a good enough friend or a good enough Christian. He worried that he wasn't doing enough for his family or for his church or for his community. He worried that he wasn't doing enough to serve others or to serve God.

But the truth is that Bill Lake was good enough--more than good enough! The truth is that Bill Lake did do enough--more than enough--for you his family, for us his Friends and church family, for others and for God. The truth of the matter is that Bill Lake was one sweetheart of a man and human being.

And so it is that today we celebrate and honour this good man's life with gratitude and with affection; and give thanks that now he will no longer be in doubt of his worthiness For now Bill takes his rightful. place in God's House in the place his Lord and our Lord has prepared for him. Thanks be to God.

Indeed, thanks be to God For giving us the gift of Bill Lake. For that's what he was to both his families, wasn't he: a gift to you his immediate family and relatives; and a gift to us his Church family. He was completely dedicated to both. Church and Family were his life!

What an enduring, enriching legacy Bill Lake leaves you his family! Bill taught you so much about life and love and service to others and good values and faith and faithfulness not just in his words, but by his example. His kindness, his sensitivity -- his basic decency -- will stay with you always, and continue to shape your characters and lives for years to come.

Bill. wasn't perfect, of course. He could be a complainer about his own health or lot in life; and yet that was often balanced by a deceptively delightful sense of humour. He was a worrier but he could also dance and soothe his soul with music. He didn't think he told you how much he loved you often enough; and yet his actions always spoke volumes and he expressed his love for you probably more than he realized.

Bill Lake: Loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, great grandfather, relative. He was indeed a gift from God to you his family.

Bill. was a divine gift to us his friends and church family too. What an enduring enriching legacy he leaves us in this Church, St. Paul's! Faithful. member all his life from Baptism to Funeral. Dedicated elder and Sunday School Superintendent for years. Willing volunteer and participant in countless church groups and events and projects

Bill Lake contributed so much to this Church, spiritually and materially. Look around this sanctuary. Bill had a talent with wood. He built this stand and case for the Book of Memorial Gifts. He built the lower extension of the Communion Table so it could fit over the last step there. He built the wooden replica of St. Paul's Church building (that we've placed on the Communion Table today) building it 15 years ago at Anniversary time to help the Sunday School. children appreciate this church and its history.

Being the humble man that he was, Bill. would probably be quite surprised at how well. and affectionately he's going to be remembered around here. I've talked to a number of people in the congregation over the past two days who have shared marvellous stories of Bill's unassuming and dedicated contributions to the life and work of St. Paul's.

Christian Education people remember him not just as a Sunday School Superintendent years ago, but also as the man you could always count on to come and run the film projector whenever the Sunday School or youth needed to see slides or a movie. One Sunday School teacher told me how Bill took her class on a tour of the church building, sharing all the history of the cornerstone in the lobby, the old turkey suppers downstairs--the kids loved it, and sent him a heartfelt thank you note. And what did Bill do? He sent them a thank you note for the thank you note, thanking them for letting him (an old man as he called himself indulge himself) by giving them a tour of the place he loved.

That was typical of Bill in this church. He gave us so much, and didn't even realize how much it & he meant to us. And he was so grateful himself for any kindness shown to him. I remember on one visit to him in the hospital last spring, he handed me a thank you note, specifically addressed to the Sunday School child who had given him an Easter Card made during her Sunday School class. Considering that he was still. recovering his writing skills after his last stroke, that letter took a lot of effort. But that's how thoughtful. and appreciative Bill always was.

Bill. and I had many good talks and visits over the years: in his apartment, in my office, in the hospital, at Riverbend. We talked about family, church and theology. I think I almost had him convinced about God's grace and love for him. Bill. was one of my favourite visits and people. I will. never forget him.

Indeed, I know that each of you here today has your own personal, memories of Bill Lake that are special and unique to you. These may cause you to smile sometimes today and to cry sometimes today. But that's OK, you know. Don't be embarrassed or confused about such emotions and reactions. They are normal and healthy. Instead, in the midst of smiles and tears, give thanks. Give thanks to God for the quality of relationship that has shaped your memories of Bill. Lake and for the memories themselves. They are gifts to you from God and Bill Lake will continue to touch your lives in good ways because of them.

I invite you to give thanks also for the promises and assurances of Bill's and our Christian faith.

Whenever someone we know and care about dies, we are confronted with death in a way we cannot avoid. And to the surface come all those uncertainties and questions and apprehensions about "How will I Cope?", "What does death mean for him and for me?" and "What, if anything, comes after death?", We want to know, we want to be assured: that we will not be alone or lonely in our grieving; that our friend and loved one's life really counted for something; that our lives really count for something; and that his and ours will continue to exist and count for something in a very real, way after physical death.

The Christian faith -- Bill's faith and our faith -- speaks to such concerns and answers them with the abiding presence of God, and with the resurrection promises of Jesus Christ.

"I will not leave you desolate," says Jesus. And so it is that we will find the comfort and strength we need in our grieving -- in God and in God's people around us.

"Let not your hearts be troubled," says Jesus [because] in my father's house are many rooms ... And ... I go to prepare a place for you ... that where I am, you may be also." And so it is that those of faith are assured that death is not some lonely final end of our existence but rather the gateway to a new, resurrected glorious existence in God's "House" where there are "many rooms'

Today, let us give thanks that Bill Lake -- a faithful Christian believer - has now inherited these promises of life and love beyond the grave and that Bill's soul is now truly at peace. Let us give thanks that these promises are offered to us also in the faithful following of Jesus.

    Indeed, thanks be to God!

    From William Lake's obituary.

Mr. Lake was born in Preston and was a lifelong resident. He had been employed at Canada Last until his retirement 17 years ago. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church.

Irvin Lake remembers Bill as always bringing a watermelon to the family picnics. The family picnics tended to be in Welland or Niagara Falls and one picnic was in Preston. (One was in Galt, one was in Tonawanda - Susan Lake)

    (Medical):Stroke about 1988.

Active in lodge work the late Mr. Lake was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, being financial secretary of the local lodge for many years, only retiring a month ago. He was also a member of Preston I.O.O.F. lodge and the Encampment.

A skilled crokinole and checker player the deceased received keen enjoyment from these two games, and was one of the founders of the Crokinole club.

    Notes:

From Vi Weber: The Henry Key family settled in the village of Scotland near Oakland. Henry and Julia had eight children, two died in infancy.

Aunt Addie and her four children lived with her family [after the death of Alton] until the children were in their early to middle teens. Aunt Addie at that time married Mr. Vail (We never called him anything but Mr. Vail). They lived on a farm near Paris. By that time Grandma and Grandpa Key had retired to Paris from the farm in Scotland. They were very fond of Aunt Addie and there was a good relationship between them.

George was born in England, Sept. 18, 1791; Barbara was born in England, April 29. 1798, and died Dec. 9, 1874. They were married October 9, 1824, in Bridekirk, Cumberland England. They came to Canada in 1844 and settled in Brantford Township, where they remained about a year, then removed to Oakland Township. They brought with them three pieces of furniture, the old corner cupboard, a settee, and a grandfather clock that went to California with George Key. They also brought with them the hand written Psalm book of 1775, the wooden "K" butter brand and the iron "GK" branding iron. They rented 400 acres between Oakland and Scotland, Ontario, from Mr. Downs. The family, or part of it, lived on this farm until only Henry Key and his wife were left, nearly forty years. George died in August, 1844, about five years after he arrived in Canada, and Barbara raised the family.

George and Barbara are buried in a small cemetery in Oakland, Ontario. In later years the cemetery was neglected, grown to weeds, some stones tumbled over, some misplaced. The county made a small park out of the cemetery by planting a lawn among the trees. The stones were placed side by side in two curved lines along one side. A pyramid at least six feet tall was built in the park and a bronze plaque was placed on the pyramid honoring those buried there.

Barbara Benn's first husband was a Mr. Banks. They had one son Joseph before Mr. Banks died.

    From Sheila Brewer, 7/2007:

A note on the birth date for Isabella Reid who is listed as marrying Jam es Allan: The actual handwritten entry in the Carluke Parish records pa ge for 1796 reads as follows:

“Isobal Daughter to Robert Reid and Betty Cunningham in Shawgill born t he 3rd and baptized the 13th Novr.”

1798 must have been a transcription error; there is no doubt that it is ac tually 1796. Isobal may be an old spelling of Isobel, or it may have be en the clerk’s misspelling (not uncommon). It is also not unusual that so meone who was christened Isobel would later be known as Isabella, dependi ng on whatever version of the name was popular at any particular tim e. On my father’s side I have an ancestor who was Isobel in the recor ds of the late 1700s but Isabella in the records of the 1800s.

    Other Events:

    • Also Known As: James Calder
    • Occupation: Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom
    • Occupation: farmer

    Notes:

The story of James Kedder is an interesting one. He had 3 sons, each having a different mother. The eldest son James was born about 1765 to an unknown mother. The second was Thomas born 11/2/1779 to Isobel Wiseman. The third was John - born 11/4/1779 to Ann Neilson. In October 1810 James Kedder left the Daviesdykes lands to the youngest son John through a will that was later challenged in the courts. James Kedder died 1/12/1814. All of this information is contained in the court papers from the June 1834 court case at Edinburgh Court of Session. I have reviewed these papers at the National Archive in Edinburgh, Scotland. John Calder (the family had changed their name by this time) the defendant lost the court case and with it the lands of Daviesdykes. He then moved to Canada with his family. The lands passed to distant cousins called Reid (3rd cousins to John) on the grounds that the will was invalid and presumably because John Calder was illegitimate, along with his half brothers.
John's half brother James went on to be a tenant farmer at Watsonfoot close to Daviesdykes. He married Betsy Neison and had several children including Alexander, my GGG Grandfather. The other half brother Thomas appears to have had a military career, joining the Royal Artillery, according to the court papers. Interestingly also, Alexander's brother - another James Calder, also moved to Ontario, Canada to farm, along with several of his children. He left Scotland in the 1860s and appears in the 1871 Canada census.

    - John Calder

Newspaper clipping from Scotland. Name of paper unknown - but it is dated 12th July, 1888 at Biggar, Lanarkshire. Transcribed by Joy Calder, 11 March 2000.

Robert Keddar ........ was succeeded by his son, James Kedder, who received a precept of clare constant from the tutors of George Marquis of Tweeddale, dated 3rd, 13th, 17th Jan, 1770. The Tutors of the Marquis who signed the deed were Lord George Hay of Linplum, John Hay of Bolton, Alexander Hay of Mordington, Charles Hay of Hoipes and Alexander Tait, clerk of session. On that precept of clare constant an instrument of sasine was taken 9th March, 1771 and recorded at Hamilton on 22 day of the same month, and registered in 269, 270 and 271 leaves of the 19th book of particular register of sasines kept there for the shire of Lanark.

    Notes:

I have looked again at the Reids who took over Daviesdykes in the late 1830s. Isobel Reid, who brought the case to court, was the daughter of an Alexander Reid who was a second cousin to John Calder, who owned Daviesdykes at the time. This means they shared a common great grandfather, who was Bernard Kedder. Alexander Reid was the son of a Margaret Kedder. I believe Margaret Kedder was the daughter of Thomas Kedder, a brother to Robert Kedder, John's grandfather - however this is somewhat speculative. Sorry if this all seems a bit confusing!

Isobel Reid's married name was Arnott. The Arnotts had several children and they were living in Edinburgh in the 1830s.
