George Clemens, "younger son of George and Elizabeth (Carlisle) Clemens, was born in Pikeland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, July 17, 1777. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm and during the winter months he attended the public school and received such an education as the times afforded. It is well known that the facilities for obtaining a good common school education were at that time far inferior to what they now are. While visiting friends in Montgomery County during the winter of 1799 and 1800, Mr. Clemens was informed that numerous families intended to move either to the western part of the state or to Ohio, and even some were meditating of moving to Canada, the way-out-of-the-world country. No sooner was he in possession of this information than he hunted up such parties who were making preparations to move to Canada in order to receive all the information that could be obtained of this country at that time. Upon his return home he informed his father of what he had heard in regard to Canada. After listening to his son for some time, his father said: 'Well George, if all be true that you have heard in regard to Canada, it truly must be a good country to go to in order to seek one's fortune, but take my advice, first go and see the country for yourself.' During the winter of 1800-1 seven families of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, made arrangements for moving to Canada which company Mr. Clemens joined. He drove one of the teams (see Historical notes on pages 22, 23, and 24 in regard to Mr. Clemens)and in May, 1801, he arrived where now the village of Blair is situated. After making a thorough inspection of this country he found everything beyond his expectations and immediately selected his land on which he settled. This was about one mile east of Preston, near Speedsville, on the farm now owned by his grandson, Isaac B. Clemens. After having cleared several acres of his land he erected a small log house and commenced housekeeping. In course of time he found the words recorded in Genesis 2:18 to be true, he therefore amended or improved his condition in life by taking to himself a wife in the person of Esther Stauffer who was born December 18th, 1790, and died August 17, 1836. After her decease he was married to (October 27th, 1840) Elizabeth, the widow of David Histand. She was a daughter of old George Bechtel and was born August 8th, 1792, and died July 21st, 1885. old Mr. George Clemens died August 10, 1863. To him and his first wife was born a family of eighteen children, viz:"- Ezra E. Eby

    • Alt. Death: 20 Oct 1818, , Montgomery, Pennsylvania, USA

    Notes:

George Clemens, "eldest son of Abraham and Catharine Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1732. When a young man his father paid him his portion of legacy and he left Montgomery County and went to Chester County, same state, where he invested in real estate in both Pikeland and Charlestown Townships. In 1760-61 he erected a grist mill where he made quite a fortune. He was married to Elizabeth Carlisle. They lived retired for several years when he died in September, 1813, aged about 81 years. To him and his wife Elizabeth were born quite a family but the names of only two sons have been handed to the writer, namely: V Abraham and V George who both settled in the county of Waterloo, Ontario." - Ezra E. Eby

There is some question as to the date of George's birth. Most sources list it as 1732, but that would make his mother 10 years of age at his time of birth.

During the American Revolution, he fought with Richard Brown's Company and fought in the Battle of Long Island, 27 Aug 1776. The muster roll of Oct 1, 1776 shows that he deserted Sept 12, which is when George Washington evacuated New York City. Desertion at this time did not necessarily mean cowardice or lack of loyalty to the Revolution. Often soldiers left to help with home harvest. There is no record of George being punished or of having his land confiscated so probably he left the army to help with harvest.

In 1776 his father's will lists him as executor of his estate.

In 1778 he married Elizabeth Carlisle. She was of Quaker descent and well educated. They had two known sons, Abraham and George. Abraham was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, married Rebecca Miller, and lived in Hespeler, Waterloo County, Ontario. George was born 17 Jul 1777, died 10 Aug 1863 and married Elizabeth Stauffer 1790-1836. They had 18 children.

    Cemetery Notes:
Honey Brook Presbyterian Church recently established a memorial garden located at the entrance of the Presbyterian Cemetery that dates back to the early 1800's.

According to the history of Honey Brook Presbyterian Church (1835 - 1985), written by the late Margaret R. Eppihimer, burial grounds were formerly called graveyards, and it was in the later years that they became known as cemeteries. Many families in Honey Brook have buried their relatives in a walled area of their farms.

Cemetery records indicate that in the early 1800's, the Emery family established a large area in the northwestern part of the cemetery designated as the Emery/Emrey or Union Cemetery. During the mid-1800's, the cemeteries were combined as one, which, until 1885, were separate and distinct from the church. In those days, the church sexton was in charge of the cemetery, and this gave him the privilege of a using a church pew without charge. He was paid $2.00 for digging an adult grave.

When the church was established in 1835, membership entitled individuals to a free grave. Today, visitors to the cemetery can find the headstones of many of the founders of the church and community of Honey Brook, but free graves are no longer available.

In 1881, an iron fence was placed around the cemetery, and the sexton was advised to lock the gates to prevent horse-driven teams from making a sport of racing through the cemetery paths. The earliest memorials in the cemetery were tablet-style stones of poor quality, and today the engravings on them are almost illegible.

On April 7, 1937, the Board of Trustees of the Presbyterian Church incorporated the cemetery as a non-profit corporation and designated 10 church trustees be responsible for its maintenance.

When the church was able to purchase more adjoning the cemetery over the years, gravesites diminished at a rapid pace. Today, with the lack of land available, the idea of a memorial garden became quite popular. The memorial garden is for cremations only and is open to the public.

She was probably of English descent. There are no mention of the name in the Mennonite records of either Pennsylvania or Europe. There was in England, close to the Scottish border, a Carlisle city, borough, and county town of Cumberland.
