- Heart Attack Fatal to Charles Masters; Services Saturday. Charles W. Masters, 62, prominent farmer, former Union county auditor and widely known as a public speaker, died late Wednesday afternoon of a heart attack suffered at the Masters farm, Valley Home, four miles east. of Everton. He had been in failing health since July 24.
Mr. Masters had taught school in Fayette county 12 years, at Everton, Waterloo and Alquina. It was from 1944 through 1946 that he coached the champion Everton High School basketball team which in 1944-45 went through the season undefeated, losing to Liberty only in the finals of the sectional tourney here.
For 10 years he was a member of the Purdue Speakers' Bureau, appearing at numerous farmers' institutes. and his services were much in demand for public addresses. He was auditor of Union county for eight years, from 1936 to 1944. Although the Masters farm, the Cockefair homestead which was the site of the old Cockefair mill, lies partly in Fayette county, the residence is across the line in Union county.
Mr. Masters was born December 1, 1884, at Everton, a son of W. C. and Melvina Steinard Masters. He attended Indiana University and Danville Normal College. On September 5, 1934. he was married to Ruth Keltner of Anderson. He was a member of Warren Lodge No. 15, F. &. A. M., and of the Evorton Methodist church. For many years he taught in the Sunday school there, and later, for two years, taught the Young Married People's class of the First Methodist church in Connersville, He was active in civic affairs of the community and in the Republican party.
Besides his widow he leaves a daughter, Mary Alice, wife of Carl L. Sadler, Jr., of Swarthmore, Pa.; two grandchildren, Anne and James Charles Sadler; and two brothers, Dr. George L. Masters of Connersville, retired dentist; and Wayne W. Masters of Everton, teacher at Junior High School. Another brother, C1yde Masters, who was connected with the Fayette Bank & Trust Company, died in 1944.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Myers Funeral Home where friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday. Dr. J. G, Moore of the First Methodist church and the Rev. U. V. Faris of the Everton Methodist church will officiate, and burial will be in the Everton cemetery.
