ABRAM RIFE
Abram Rife, with Mary, his bride of one year, came to Montana in 1872. They came by train from Hespler, Ontario, Canada to Corrine, Utah and then by stage coach bringing their belongings by wagon freight and settled in Red Rock Valley near Crabtree, Montana.
These belongs were a melodian, some chairs, a sewing machine and a library consisting of two large volumes of Sir Walter Scott's Waverly novels, a Bible and a Psalter (a Scotch hymn book) and two milk cows.
In 1880, when the Railway came through the valley, the Rife family— now with three little girls— moved to Dillon.
At this time, Mr. Rife bought several acres of land west of Blacktail Deer Creek (the creek running through Dillon) and extending to the Beaverhead River, where he operated a dairy for 20 years or more. This land was purchased from Mr. George Smith. Rife Street on the west side of Dillon is named for Mr. Rife as is the section of Dillon known as the Rife Addition.
Mr. Rife once served as the Mayor of Dillon. Bella Rife, his daughter, was County Superintendent of schools for two terms.
Fred Rife, his son was Clerk of the Court in Beaverhead County and serving a third term when he passed away in 1936.
Mr. and Mrs. Rife celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1921.
