Hurst, Sarah

Mrs. Samuel Reynolds

After an illness of not quite two days duration, the death occurred on Friday October 27, of Sarah Hurst, wife of the late Samuel Reynolds, who passed away at her home, 89 Toronto street, at the age of 84 years. Her death came as a shock to hosts of friends in Barrie and the district where she was widely known. Most of her family were present at her bedside.

Mrs. Reynolds was born and raised on a farm in Markham but she spent most of her life in this district. Shortly after her parents moved from Markham to Innisfil, near Stroud, she married Samuel Reynolds, whose farm adjoined that of her father and the union between the two was a supremely happy one. On Mar. 4, 1920, they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary, and were at the time surrounded by a family of 10 - six daughters and four sons. This happy event saddened a year later by the death of Mr. Reynolds on the 5th of December, 1921.

Up till about eight years ago Mrs. Reynolds lived with her husband in Innisfil. They resided at Craigvale for a number of years and Mr. Reynolds carried on a coal business there. When he disposed of this they came to Barrie to spend their declining years.

Mrs. Reynolds was a woman of sterling character, unselfish in her desire to help those who needed her sympathy and care. She was a member of the Central Methodist church at the time of her death. Surviving daughters and sons are Mrs. George Dyer of Holly, Mrs. Henry Pratt of Barrie, Mrs. James E. Simpson of Pittsburg, Mrs. Thomas Mullholland of Toronto, and Miss Etna Reynolds at home; William and Jack of Toronto, Herbert of Pittsburg and Albert of London. A brother, Robert Hurst of Toronto, also survives.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon, October 30, and it took place from her late residence to the Stroud Methodist church and thence to the Stroud Cemetery where the remains were laid to rest. The services were conducted by Rev. E. T. Douglas of Barrie assisted by Rev. Mr. Stevenson of Stroud, and the pallbearers included the following: William Hurst and Bert Pratt of Toronto, Murray Reynolds of Barrie, Russell Webb of Stroud and Morely and Elmer Dyer of Holly.

Innisfil Pioneer Passes in Barrie
Mrs. Samuel Reynolds Who Lived Long and Usefully, Rests at Stroud.

After a brief illness, Mrs. Samuel Reynolds passed away at her late residence, 89 Toronto St., on Friday October 27, in her eighty-fifth year.

Mrs. Reynolds, whose maiden name was Sarah Hurst, was born at Markham on January 20, 1837. In 1860 she was married to Samuel Reynolds and they came to the Tenth concession of Innisfil, near Stroud, to farm. After farming for several years they moved to Craigvale where Mr. Reynolds became a coal merchant at which occupation he continued until 1914, when he retired and took up residence in Barrie.

Mrs. Reynolds was one of Innisfil's pioneers and by her death one of the township's oldest residents is taken. In religion the late Mrs. Reynolds was a Methodist, and before coming to Barrie was an active member of the Stroud Methodist church. Since coming to Barrie she attended the Central Methodist church.

On March 4, 1920, Mr. & Mrs. Reynolds celebrated their diamond jubilee. Their ten children were all at the parental home on this occasion and a happy re-union was enjoyed. The first sorrow to darken the memory of that happy day came on Dec. 5, 1921, when the father, Samuel Reynolds, passed away.

Mrs. Reynolds, despite her age, enjoyed excellent eyesight and hearing until the last. It was not until Wednesday of last week that she complained of illness, but, she sank rapidly, the end coming on Friday morning.

A kind neighbor, a helpful friend, a sympathetic mother and an energetic church worker, she was beloved by all who knew her.

There are left to mourn her loss four sons and six daughters. The sons are William and Jack of Toronto, Hubert of Pittsburg and Albert of London. The daughters, Mrs. Geo. Dyer, Holly; Mrs. Henry Pratt, Stroud; Mrs. J. E. Simpson, Pittsburg; Mrs. Thos. Mulholland; Toronto, Mrs. L. Pratt and Miss Etna Reynolds, in Barrie. One brother, Robert Hurst of Toronto, also survives.

interment took place on Monday to Stroud cemetery, Rev. E. T. Douglas, assisted by Stevenson, officiating. The many beautiful floral tributes which were received bore silent testimony to the place the deceased held in the hearts of her friends.

The pall-bearers were Wilson Hurst, Toronto: Bert Pratt, Toronto; Murray Reynolds, Barrie; Russell Webb, Stroud; Morley and Elmer Dyer, Holly.

Besides the immediate relatives those from out-of-town who attended the funeral were Mr. & Mrs. Hurst Jr., Toronto; Mrs. Miller, Penetang, and Mrs. Johnson of Midland.
