First Generation
«/b»1. Thomas Calder «/b»was born on 6 Apr 1802 at Watston in Cambusnethan, Lanark.1 Thomas Calder son to James Calder &
Betty Neilson at Watston was born on the 6th Bap't 11th Apr 1802. Being their 7th Child.
In 1837 he was a Baker at Kirkton Street in Carluke, Lanarkshire.2 He appeared in the census on 6 Jun 1841 at Kirkton
Street in Carluke, Lanarkshire.3 On the 1841 census for Carluke, living on Kirkton Street were: Thomas Calder, age 35, a
Baker, and married to Elizabeth Calder, age 35, both born in Lanarkshire. Living with them were their 8 children, all born in
Lanarkshire: James, 14; Alexander, 12; Thomas, 10; William, 8; John, 6; Mary, 4; Coventry, 2; and, George, 2 months.
Thomas died about 1846 at the age of 44 in Lanarkshire. Thomas was present on the 1841 census with his wife, Elizabeth,
and 8 children. He was not present on the 1851 census and Elizabeth was a widow. A mid point year of "about 1846" was
entered for his year of death. Nfi.
Thomas Calder and Elizabeth Paton were married about 1826 in Lanarkshire. The marriage year of "about 1826" is based on
the birth of their oldest known child, James, who was born 17 Feb 1827 at Carluke, Lanarkshire.
Elizabeth Paton«/b», daughter of Coventry Paton and Mary Miller, was born about 1804 in Glasgow. May 1806
Coventry Paton, Stocking Maker, Parkhead & Mary Miller had their 2nd Child born 23rd May bap'dz 8th June named Isobel.
William Carrich & John Thomson witnesses.
From the above citation for Isobel's birth, she is the second child of Coventry & Mary. It has been assumed that the first child
is Elizabeth, born about 1804 based on their marriage in 1803. On the 1851 census her birthplace is recorded as Glasgow,
probably in Parkhead.
She appeared in the census on 6 Jun 1841 at Kirkton Street in Carluke, Lanarkshire.4 She appeared in the census on 30 Mar
1851 at 1 Back Road in Carluke, Lanarkshire.5 On the 1851 census for Carluke: Elisabeth Calder, a Widow, age 45,
occupation Housekeeper, was born in Glasgow. Living with her were 6 of her children, all unmarried: William, 17, Baker,
born in Carstairs; John, 16, Miner, born in Carstairs; Mary, 14, Sewer, born in Carluke; Coventry, 12, Miner, born in
Carluke; Betsy, 8, Scholar, born in Carluke; and, Isabella, 6, Scholar at home, born in Carluke. Also living with them was a
niece, Elisabeth McIntosh, age 12, Scholar, born in Glasgow.
Note: Elizabeth McIntosh also appears on the 1851 census with her family in Glasgow, living at 15 Kirk St. The head of the
family is Annabella McIntosh (sister of Elizabeth Calder), Widow. Elizabeth McIntosh is described as: age 12, Scholar, born
in Glasgow.
Elizabeth died before 1855 at the age of 51 in Lanarkshire. Elizabeth is not present on the 1861 census and her death is not
recorded in statutory records between 1 Jan 1855 and 31 Dec 1861. Therefore, it has been assumed that she died sometime
after the 1851 census and before 1855. On the 1861 census 2 of her daughters, Mary & Isabella Calder, are living with their
grandmother, Mary Paton (nee Miller), another indication that Elizabeth has died before the census on 7 Apr 1861.
Elizabeth Paton has the unusual distinction of having no birth, marriage or death records. Other than for the births of her 10
children, her only appearances on official records are the 1841 and 1851 census returns.
Thomas Calder and Elizabeth Paton had the following children:

ending Dec 1882 at age 43 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. He likely had died between Oct 1 and Dec 8 as he would have
been 44 years old on Dec 9 1882. A death month of October 1882 has been entered to be consistent with John Calder's chart
on Coventry Calder.
Note: Family details, including marriage of Coventry Calder and Agnes Grierson, are documented on the Reynolds - Lake

Coventry Calder and Agnes Grierson had the following children:
30 i. Thomas Calder «/b»was born in Feb 1863 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England.107 Thomas Calder was born in
the Qtr. ending Mar 1863 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. The middle month of the quarter i.e.,
February was entered.
He appeared in the census on 2 Apr 1871 at St Mary Without in Cumberland, England.108 He appeared
in the census on 3 Apr 1881 at Caldewgate in Cumberland, England.109
+31 ii. Coventry Calder«/b», born May 1867, Carlisle, Cumberland, England; married Elizabeth Walker, Feb 1888,
Carlisle, Cumberland, England; died Jul 1895, Carlisle, Cumberland, England.
32 iii. Elizabeth Calder «/b»was born in Nov 1869 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England.110 The birth of Elizabeth
Coulthard (sic) was recorded during the quarter ended Dec 1869 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England.
Accordingly a birth month of Nov 1869, being the middle month of the quarter, was entered.
No birth record for Elizabeth Calder could be found for the appropriate period. Yet she is on the 1871
census as a daughter, age 1 year and born in Carlisle. A phonetic search on Calder was undertaken and
Coulthard is the only name that appeared, other than Calder. Her record seems to fit and, accordingly, she
has been included in the family grouping.
She appeared in the census on 2 Apr 1871 at St Mary Without in Cumberland, England.111
10. Betsy Neilson "aka Elizabeth" Calder «/b»(Thomas-1) was born on 20 Jul 1842 in Carluke, Lanarkshire.112 She appeared

on 12 Dec 1909, age 66, at 1 Bell Place, Edinburgh. She was married to John McAuslin, Gardener, who was also the
informant. Her parents were Thomas Calder, Master Baker (deceased) & Elizabeth Calder M. S. Paton (deceased).
Note: Details on Betsy's marriage to John McAuslin and their 5 children are available on the Reynolds - Lake website.
However, 2 additional children have been identified and entered. Also, the parentage of the first child on the Reynolds - Lake
website, John, born abt. 1868 in Glasgow, is questionable. See General note on John McAuslin's record for more details.
Betsy Neilson "aka Elizabeth" Calder and John McAuslin were married on 20 Nov 1868 at 40 Abbotsford Place in
Tradeston, Glasgow.118 On the 20th day of November at40 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow were married After Banns according

Calder, Domestic Servant, Spinster, age 24.
The usual residence of the groom was Legacy House, Parish of Row (Dunbartonshire). His parents were John McAuslin,
Farm Labourer & Jessie McAuslin M. S. Rowat.
The usual residence of the bride was Ardmore House, Parish of Row (Dunbartonshire). Her parents were Thomas Calder,
Baker Master (deceased) & Elizabeth Calder M. S. Paton (deceased).
Witnesses were David McAuslin & Isabella Calder.
John McAuslin«/b»119 was born about 1840 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. On both the 1871 and 1881 census returns John's
birthplace is listed as Hamilton, Lanarkshire. His age on the 1881 census indicates that he was born "about 1840".
He appeared in the census on 2 Apr 1871 at Lochhhall in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire.120 On the 1871 census for
Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, living at Lochhall were: John McAuslan (sic), age 30, a Gardener, born in Hamilton,

He appeared in the census on 3 Apr 1881 at St. Germains in Tranent, East Lothian.121 On the 1881 census for Tranent, East
Lothian, living at Gardeners Charge?, Mansion House, St. Germains were: John McAuslin, age 41, a Gardener & Domestic

Hastings, Sussex, England, living at St. Helens Road, Ore were: John McAuslin, age 47, a Gardener & Domestic Servant,
born Lanarkshire, Scotland and married to Elizabeth McAuslin, age 43, born in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Living with them
were their 2 youngest children: James, age 16, single, a Gardener & Domestic Servant, born in Dunbartonshire, Scotland;
and, Sarah, age 14, Scholar, born in Haddingtonshire, Scotland.
The Reynolds-Lake website identifies 5 children of John McAuslin & Betsy Neilson Calder. I have identified 2 further
children, James born in 1874 and Sarah born in 1876.
However, the first child on the Reynolds-Lake website, John McAuslin born about 1868 in Glasgow does not seem to fit with
this family. There is no record of his birth, nor does he show up on census documents with the family. As described on the
Reynolds-Lake website there is a record of the death of John McAuslin on 30 Dec 1891, "killed near Glasgow". The source
for this information is a memorial inscription. On ScotlandsPeople the death of John McAuslin, age 23, is recorded in
Cathcart, Lanarkshire, but the date of death is 30 Dec 1891 and death occurred at Victoria Infirmary and his usual residence
was ??? Cathcart.
His parents were listed as John McAuslin, Gardener & Domestic Servant. This sounds like the father as he is described in
this manner numerous times. The mother is Mary Campbell. The original inscription was Mary McAuslin m. s. Campbell but
"McAuslin m. s." has been scratched out, leaving the impression that the parents were not married. Also, in the name of the
deceased the word "Illegitimate" is written.
The conclusion is that John McAuslin Sr. may have been the father but the mother was not Betsy Neilson Calder.
John McAuslin and Betsy Neilson Calder had the following children:
33 i. Elizabeth McAuslin «/b»was born on 8 Sep 1869 in Southend, Argyllshire.123 Elizabeth McAuslin was born

She died in Mar 1872 at the age of 0 in Carluke, Lanarkshire.129 Jessie is not present on the 1881 (or
1891) census with her family. A search of ScotlandsPeople revealed that a Jessie McAuslin died in 1872
in Carluke, Lanarkshire. The assumption is that this is her. An assumed month of death was entered as
March 1872.
36 iv. Elizabeth McAuslin «/b»was born on 28 Feb 1873 in Barony, Lanark.130 Elizabeth McAuslin was born on 28
